Blog 6 Mood Board
The genre I picked was war movies, which are typically about the trauma experienced during war, and the horrors of war. In particular; I chose World War 1, which was one of the deadliest wars in human history. The genre interests me for it's ability to transport the viewer to a period which, although we were born too late to experience, changed the lives of millions. War, is placed front and center in it's full horror, showcasing the struggle of the great men who put their lives on the lines. It allows us to live in a reality that we couldn't, and it honors the dead and wounded of war. It's also a great way to visually digest history. Instead of reading dates on textbook, you are seeing them unfold in front of you eyes in vivid detail. The film format allows a more personal view of the war, establishing a more real connection between the past and present.
My mood board showcases multiple items from the time period. Weapons, supplies, clothes, rations; all items which soldiers would've carried into the trenches during the time. There are photos of immense strife and destruction, snapshots of what was the most horrific moment in the soldier's lives. I think they show to highlight the isolation one would feel, even when surrounded by fellow soldiers. The detachment from normality, from family, and safety.
Even back home, food was rationed, and propaganda posters were ridden all over the streets of the nations participating in the conflict, never allowing the citizens to escape the grasp of the conflict. Messages such as "Eat less bread" show the desperation felt; as in no ordinary circumstance would the freedom of food be restricted for the army to have what would've been on the civilian's table that night. Overall, the genre takes us back to a time of extreme measures, and extreme suffering. My Mood Board illustrates this from the items we have left of the era, and the memories they carry with them.
